Your Generator Needs

To determine whether a generator is appropriate for your needs, you need to first add up the wattage of tools, appliances, and motors you want to run at the same time. Then select a generator with the running wattage rating to match or exceed the total load.

Keep in mind that tools and appliances with electric motors require additional surge wattage at startup that can be double or triple the normal running wattage requirement. Look at the surge watts required and make sure you choose a generator with enough additional wattage to start them. (And remember that you're typically not starting more than half of the items at the same time.)

We have used over the last 3 days to power fridge, 2 fans, charge mobile phones and laptops and run a few lights. We are getting approx a run time of just over 13 hours on one tank (4 gallon) of gas.

Last night even hooked up the tv and cable so our son could watch some tv. Nick, Nick, Nick, Nickeloden. :)

This morning it powered the coffee maker and iron so we could be awake and wrinkle free.

I really did not expect the generator to run as long as it did on one tank so very happy with the purchase.

Next thing to purchase is something to cover it in case of heavy rain. Setup a tarp over table with bungee cords last night but would like something quicker to setup.

If we continue to have the power outage problem here in Oak Park we may look into the natural gas generator that hooks into electric system and fails over automatically. As always we will try to get it from Amazon our favorite store.Belt Driven MeccAlte 10200, Coleman 13hp, Duracell DG60B2, Generac 5690, Generac 5693, Generac 5754, Generac 5865, Generac Guardian QT03016ANSX, Generator Gas , Hitachi E43, Makita G1100, Makita G6100R, New 1250 Watt , NorthStar Belt Driven, Portagen Electric Start , Powermate 7125 Watt, Powermate 8125 Watt , Powermate Portable Generator, Pramac Generator 3600 Watts, Ramsey VG400WT, Trail Tech Electrical, 1.1hp GX25 OHV, 10000 8500 Watt Portable, 5MHz Function Generator, 8hp Horizontal , All Power America APG3090C, Briggs Stratton 30430, Briggs Stratton 40304 , Briggs Stratton 30335, Briggs Stratton Generator, CEP Portable Power, Coleman Powermate PM0497000, Dek 6500 Watt , Yamaha EF3000iSEJ, EXCEL 2200W, Extreme Max EXT3000P, Gen-2 Liquid Propane, Generac 4583, GENERAC 5793 , Generac 5851 QP85D, Generac Guardian QT04524ANSC, Generac QT03016ANSX, Generac RTS Transfer, Gentron 6000watt , Gentron PRO2 , Gentron PRO2 C Model

We give the DuroStar DS4000S 4,000 Watt 7.0 HP OHV 4-Cycle Gas Powered Portable Generator 2 thumbs up and/or a 5 star rating. Bang for buck we are very happy with this purchase.
I am very impressed with the overall build quality of this generator. Every component down to the paint used appears high quality and well fitted. The engine is a refined 7hp OHV unit with rubber engine mounts and a large heavy steal muffler. The frame is also sturdy gauge steel with rubber pads underneath to dampen vibration.

For a generator, it is quiet. I wouldn't suggest trying to sleep in the same room with it while its running, but unlike another review here, its not like a freight train, but more like a quiet lawnmower. I thought I heard a noise when I first started it so I had my ear against the unit trying to isolate the source and it was not at all loud of uncomfortable even this close. In the end, the noise was just the gauge on the gas tank since it was near empty.

I put a 1800 watt resistive and inductive load on it and it only had a small impact on the engine and seemed to handle this just fine. When I ran it dry for storage, the engine of course oscillated as it ran out of gas, but the voltage output remained constant. Not a real world test, but seems promising and a good buy for the money.
I can't recommend highly enough the generator that we bought last year. It had sat unopened in its box until 4:00AM on Saturday. It is very simple to use for the first time and appears to have good quality components and construction (all the bolts are tightened in silicone or some other rubber so as not to vibrate loose. It started on the first pull and ran without stuttering while powering our refrigerator and 10k BTU portable air conditioner plus laptops and charging portable devices through the time that our power was out in northern Virginia over the weekend. After our power came back on we loaned it to some friends whose power was out for another 12 hours. It has about 36 hours of total run time on it and the crankcase is still full and the oil has not blackened (which indicates to me lots of gas passing into the crankcase or lots of frictional wear in a very short time). It ran and honest 8+ hours on a four gallon tank of fuel. All Power America APG3014, DuroMax Elite MX4500, Champion Power 46539, Yamaha EF2000iS, DuroStar DS4000S, DuroMax XP10000E, DuroMax XP4400E, DuroMax Elite MX4500E, Generac Guardian Series 5875, Briggs Stratton 30469, GenTran KIT3026, ETQ PG30P11 , Champion Power 42431, Yamaha EF2400iSHC, WEN 56352, Powermate PM0497000.04, Xantrex 802-1500, Briggs Stratton 30470, GenTran 25-Foot , Goldline AQ-TROL-HP , Yamaha EF1000iS, Briggs Stratton 30466, Sportsman GEN4000LP , Generac CorePower Series 5837, Generac 6000, Champion Power Equipment 41135, Generac Guardian Series 5873 , DuroMax XP4400, Briggs Stratton 30473, Sportsman GEN2000LP, TRC 34750, Champion Power 46533 , Westinghouse WH7000E, Coleman CM04143N, Generac 5940, DuroStar DS4400 , DuroMax XP10000E-CA, Champion Power B46517, DuroMax Elite MX1500, Generac Guardian 5871 , Generac 5735, ETQ IN2500I

The two things that you need to buy to go with it are about 24" of 1/8" rubber fuel line and a grounding rod, wire, and clamp from Lowes or Home Deport. The only irritating thing about the generator was that when our friends returned it yesterday with a full tank of gas I had to follow the instructions for draining it before long term storage and that involved using a funnel to catch the gasoline and store it in a small gas can. It was time intensive and lost a lot of gas to vaporization which created a fume hazard while I was draining it. If you are prepared with a 24"-36" piece of rubber fuel line you can set it on a bench and put the gas can beneath it with the rubber fuel line connected to the petcock. That extra length of fuel line would empty the tank much faster because of the suction created in the tube and be a lot safer because you would not have a stream of fuel creating vapors as it went into the funnel. Lowes had a good 8' copper clad steel grounding rod with both ends semi pointed for driving it into the ground for about $12 and 10' of copper grounding wire was another $10. I cut the rod in half with a hacksaw so that I have two grounding rods and it was easy to drive in to the dirt in our back yard. I also decided to spend an extra $35 on the wheel kit yesterday that will make it much easier to move than picking up. It is almost 100lbs without fuel and carrying it down the slope in our back yard by myself was a bit tricky. With an extra 30 pounds of gasoline it would not have been possible for me to carry by myself.
